An (empty) apartment tour!

11 May

Our sweet new landlady let us into our future apartment to take measurements and pictures last week. We’re downsizing, so I needed to be able to make sure the furniture we want to keep will fit! The bed barely makes it into the bedroom, but the chest of drawers had to go. Thankfully, the living room is relatively large, so our couch, chairs, breakfast nook/craft table, and bookshelves will all fit. The other pieces were loaned to us by my mom, so we can give those back to her when she finds her new house. We really enjoy how much natural light there is in our new space, and how charming and treehouse-like it is! I can’t wait to decorate it like a little bohemian hobbit hole. Our landlady even offered for us to use a rug they already had:

Isn’t it lovely?

Now, for the tour!

One more thing. The whole area is historical, so there are plaques on the house and duplex next door. Since we’re living above what used to be a barber shop, I can’t help but be reminded of Sweeney Todd! There is something a little macabre about the space, that the previous tenants apparently didn’t like very much. The contractor hired to renovate the property was a little kooky, and so is the landlady. They found something in one of the walls of the house, and they named him Dougie.

Guys, that’s a naturally mummified rat! They decided to give him a proper burial, and came up with this shadow/window box idea, installed on the wall between the garage and laundry room. I know, I know, it’s creepy, it’s weird, it’s bizarre, and that’s why I love it. We used to have a couple of Dumbo rats as pets, so I also love that they respected this rat enough to give him an honored place on the property. Best. Conversation. Piece. Ever.

Gentle hugs,

Okay, so I just found your blog. Can I steal the last part of this post so I can turn Dougie into a guest post on Offbeat Home? This is just too amazing.
